“How do you take your photography to the next step in production, branding, and business to create a career of longevity and success?
This one day Masterclass is a crash course in fashion, beauty, and portrait photography with New York City-based fashion and fine art photographer Mark de Paola.
The program will explore critical elements needed for success in the development of a career in photography. Whether you have interest in fashion, portrait or the fine art industry, this program is certain to inspire you and provide a wealth of information guaranteed to impact your creative direction. Mark will share touchstone moments from his over thirty years in the business. Expect a frank, unfiltered, play by play of his experiences and knowledge of what it takes to stand out, get hired and survive as a photographer.
Topics covered include:
- Avenues to “break into the business”
- Mistakes to avoid when starting out.
- Steps to finding your photographic style.
- How to talk about and present your work.
- The pros and cons of living in and out of the “fashion cities”
- A briefing on “The Team” required to be successful in fashion and portraiture photography
- Do you need and are your ready for an agent and manager?
- Knowing when to say “no, thank you.”
The professional fashion, fine art, and portrait sectors of photography are largely a very closed community of those who are either in and out of the business. This session will de-mystify the core tools required to become a professional photographer. de Paola will provide a variety of step by step avenues to take in order to break into the photographic business. Think of this online program as a starter tool chest with each tool being wielded as an instrument to be used under a variety of common professional scenarios.
The day will begin with de Paola dissecting his own artistic vision by identifying specific stories from memory and present day that define the visual translation into his photographic style. Following, you’ll learn how to do the same and bring both your past and present experiences into your work.
Combining a discussion on the importance of practical knowledge, as well as a feverish consummation of both the history of photography, and current industry trends, de Paola will outline the pieces to the puzzle in presenting a professional that is informed, durable, and in for the long haul.
After a brief break for lunch and to reset, de Paola will be joined by his production team to create a dialogue for attendees to learn more about the roles behind the curtain of fashion and portraiture imagery. Beginning the afternoon session with a lecture on industry etiquette, de Paola will share a few key stories (without names!) of scenarios gone wrong, easy-made rookie mistakes, and the knowing when and when not to pitch yourself. In addition, as working as a photographer is a very global industry, de Paola and his production team will share a few key cultural tips on working with prospective clients in various countries and cultures around the world.
In the final third of the program, de Paola will get to the meat and potatoes of it all: the creative pitch, the role of the team and its’ members, and a brief discussion on the creative shoot. For this final portion of the program, de Paola will be joined by one of his favorite collaborators, art director, stylist, Producer, Editor, and Image & Creative consultant, Alessia Caliendo.
What is included?

De Paola continues to work with select clients around the world. His most recent commercial works are the Art of Backstage worldwide collaboration with Aveda during New York Fashion Week. His lectures and workshops including “Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition” at the Contemporary Jewish Museum San Francisco, “Leica M Panel” with Ralph Gibson and Leica Camera at Photoville New York City, and “Photography Wide Open” at the Leica Store San Francisco, the Leica Gallery Los Angeles, the Leica Gallery Tokyo, and Photoville NYC.
Most recently, his fine art photographic series, “60 Seconds,” was exhibited at the Leica Gallery San Francisco, the Leica Gallery Los Angeles, the Leica Gallery Boston, and the Leica Gallery Tokyo, and is now touring to select cities including Chicago, Washington DC, Miami, and New York City.
“60 Seconds” delves into a realm of abstract figures, fluidity, and poetic forms, challenging and seducing the limits of motion contained within still image. With each photograph taken handheld with a 60 second exposure, de Paola has discovered the connection between his physiological make up, the Leica M camera as a tool, and time, the unflinching competitor to the timeless image.
Trained as a fashion designer and fashion stylist at IED in Rome, Alessia Caliendo then moved to London to attend the “Fashion Styling for Professionals”, the “Art Direction for Fashion,” and the “Fashion Journalism” specialization courses at Central Saint Martins. She has several international publications to her credit, and you can find her name within many advertising campaigns, music videos, and celebrity work. From 2014 to present, she teaches internationally established fashion courses with universities and institutions. In 2018, Caliendo was hired by Condé Nast Italia to produce content with Vogue Italia, Vanity Fair, Glamour, and GQ, and as a master instructor for Condé Nast Academy.
