The Leica Akademie proudly introduces for the first time, The Advancing Photographer, an exclusive opportunity for personal study with legendary photographer Ralph Gibson.
The Advancing Photographer initiative is a collaboration between Ralph Gibson and the individual attendee rather than a group event. The program is designed to address specific concerns of the serious practitioner on an individual basis. Your course of study will be personalized to your areas of interest and confidently guided by Ralph’s unparalleled experience and the uniqueness of the works submitted for discussion.

WHAT IS INCLUDED
- An initial consultation with Ralph’s producer to work on your tailored curriculum, goals, and topics of interest.
- One month of personalized study with Ralph Gibson
- Four individual 60-minute sessions devoted to your photographs scheduled on a weekly basis.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This program is ideal for intermediate to advanced photographers with an interest in refining their personal vision. However, all experienced levels are welcome to attend. Also, photographers with a personal project or a collection of images that they feel could make a book or exhibition are encouraged to apply. This experience is a rare opportunity to work with a true master of photography and of the fine art photography book.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
All sessions will take place online through the Zoom platform. Flexible scheduling is guaranteed with several time options offered to the student over the four weeks. Several time options will be offered weekly to ensure the maximum flexibility to meet your schedule.

INSTRUCTOR
Gibson (b.1939) studied photography in the US Navy and further pursued the medium at the San Francisco Art Institute in the early 1960’s. Gibson went on to assist Dorothea Lange and later, Robert Frank on two of his films, launching his professional career. Having a strong interest in books and book-making, he founded his own publishing company, Lustrum Press out of New York and went on to create his trilogy, The Somnambulist, Deja Vu, and Days at Sea which were instant hits and helped solidify his mark as a key player in 20th century photography.
Gibson’s photographs are in many important museum collections and have been shown in hundreds of exhibitions across the globe. His awards include a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, Leica Medal of Excellence, Lucie Lifetime Award among many others, and in 2002 he was appointed Commandeur de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de France.
