The Coastal Landscape with D. Randall Blythe & Leica – October 27th-28th, 2018
Spend two days with photographer D. Randall Blythe exploring the sea and shore in Rockport, MA.
This workshop will focus on photographing beautiful coastal landscapes, with an additional emphasis on utilizing photography as a vehicle to raise environmental awareness- both physically (becoming more aware of one’s surroundings by the sea) and in a broader ecological/societal sense. The coastal environment provides by far the most dynamic landscape to photograph– a myriad of constantly and swiftly changing factors can change the subject matter’s appearance completely within minutes, providing the photographer with several markedly different photos of the same location during the same day. Photographers will learn to approach the coastal environment from an educated perspective in order to get the best shots.
This hands-on Akademie workshop will combine lectures and conversations from Blythe, while en route to Rockport from Boston, with a workshop assignment customized to each students goals. This is an opportunity to take inspiration from Blythe’s exhibition, A Longer View, currently on display at the Leica Gallery Boston and receive feedback on your own images, directly from the artist.
Topics covered include:
- The importance of situational awareness on the coast (for safety and image quality).
- Natural light and the using the world’s largest reflective surface (the ocean).
- Working with tides, wind, and swell.
- Importance of focal points and foreground in creating interesting coastal images.
- Searching for “the decisive moment” by the sea.
- Man made structures on the coast as subject matter.
- Showing respect for the coastal environment while on location.
- Finding beauty in the transient nature of the coastal environment.
- Protecting camera gear at the beach.
