Overview:
Recommit to your personal photographic project as your New Year’s resolution! This is your invitation to work directly with renowned photographer and educator Stella Johnson, to develop your body of work from concept to image-making and onward.
During this six week-workshop (one meeting per week), Stella will work with you individually and in group sessions that will help you conceive your project, define your ideas, concepts, and connections, and cover all the details of working on a long-term project.
Topics covered:
- Project concept development – ideas, practice exercises, image-lists
- Persevering when feeling stuck!
- Editing and sequencing
- Project statements and artist statements
- The importance of patience in long term projects
Schedule:
The class meets 12:00pm – 2:30pm EDT for six consecutive Sundays. We will have five group sessions. The first session will be an individual 25-minute session with Stella.

Who should take this workshop?
This class is open to anyone interested in making photographs that go beyond the single image. You may not have a project in mind, but by assessing your work, Stella can connect the dots and help you understand what you have been doing. The goal is to photograph what you love and transform your interests into an in-depth project you will enjoy photographing.
Class size is limited to only 8 students.
Note: while this workshop is sponsored by Leica Camera, you may work with any brand camera to participate.

Instructor:
Stella Johnson is a photographer and educator known for her passionate and honest documentary projects. She received a Core Fulbright Scholar Grant to photograph in Mexico in 2003, and Fulbright Specialist grants to teach in Mexico in 2006 and in Colombia in 2018.
The University of Maine Press published her first monograph, Al Sol: Photographs from Mexico, Cameroon, and Nicaragua in 2008. ZOI, her second monograph, was published in 2018 by Wild Greek Press.
A dedicated educator, Johnson holds teaching positions at Boston University and Lesley University College of Art and Design. She also teaches workshops in Greece, Cuba, Colombia and Mexico. Johnson holds a BFA from The San Francisco Art Institute and an MS in Journalism from Boston University.
Johnson’s photographs have been widely exhibited in the United States and internationally. Her work is held in public collections including The DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, The Haggerty Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Portland Museum of Art, and The Southeast Museum of Photography, among others.
She was a 2018 and 2013 finalist for the Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship, Photolucida Critical Mass Top 50, twice, and a nominee for the Boston Foundation’s Brother Thomas Fellowship. Johnson’s work has received numerous honors including a New England Foundation for the Arts Cultural Collaborative Artist-in-Residence Grant and Julia Margaret Cameron Award.
