In today’s photo industry, a professional’s success is often determined by their ability to meet the demand of a wide variety of clients. Gone are the days when photographers would specialize in only one genre. While the subject matter may change, what has never changed is the requirement of the photographer to “Get the Picture.”
Join Leica and Los Angeles based professional photographer, Joey Carman for a day-long session that will reveal his approach to getting the right shot every time, no matter where you are or what your subject matter is.
A week in the life of Joey Carman can include corporate portraits one day, an editorial lifestyle assignment the next, and a wedding with stills and video on the weekend. A working photographer for more than 25 years, he has the experience dealing and adapting to situations that can change on a dime. For example, expecting one hour to work with a band or actor, but then only getting three minutes and with that, a last-minute change of location.
His discussions throughout the day will provide practical examples of how he uses his gear, often working solo, on everything from music photography, to editorial and commercial work, to product and weddings. Using his own images as examples, Carman will “deconstruct” some of his more iconic images and share his tips and preferred settings, so you can capture memorable images of your own.
- How to make “something” from “nothing” while on-location
- Keys to communication with the person in front of the camera
- Lighting and framing with limited time
- Tips for working alone at events and weddings
- Working in the Studio with the Leica SL and off camera flash
- Focusing options, customizing controls
- Transitioning from another system to the Leica SL
Carman will discuss his personal journey in discovering Leica, and how switching to the SL system has impacted his photography and workflow while allowing him to reduced his gear to a single backpack. The use of flash photography and wireless lighting off-camera, for those interested in exploring flash photography, will also be discussed.
