Black & White: A Workshop With Alan Schaller
Join the Leica Akademie in New York for a Black & White workshop with UK based photographer Alan Schaller this September 19th-20th, 2019.
This comprehensive workshop will heighten your understanding of black and white photography, both at the time of capture, and when editing. You will be shown how to coax the maximum tonality from any scene, from portraits with rich tonal depth through to high contrast street scenes. Alan Schaller’s black and white photography has found its way to the front covers of magazines, in leading newspapers, used for advertising by luxury brands, and has been exhibited and featured internationally. If you have a passion for black and white, in any genre of photography, this is your chance to learn how to set yours apart.

Thursday – 10:00am – 6:00pm
10:00am to 12.30pm: Morning lecture session in gallery with Alan. Introductions and an explanation of Alan’s approach to Black and White photography.
1:30pm -6:00pm: Following lunch an afternoon of shooting: This session will be an opportunity to put into practice what was discussed in the morning. Alan will work with everyone individually over the course of the afternoon.
Friday – 10:00am – 5:00pm
10:00am to 12.30pm: Morning shooting session.
1:30pm – 5:00pm: An afternoon of review of student images from the day before or preexisting work: A discussion of post procession and different ways to approach it.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This workshop is open to all levels of photographers who are keen to grow their skill set. Owning a Leica is not required. Limited to 12 Students.
*A Leica Camera is not required for this class. Students must have a basic or intermediate operational knowledge of their camera. An assortment of Leica Cameras will be available on loan to try out.
Alan Schaller is a London based photographer who specialises in black and white photography. His work is often abstract and incorporates elements of surrealism, geometry, high contrast and the realities and diversities of human life.
Publications who have featured his work include The Guardian, The New York Times T Magazine, The Washington Post, The Financial Times, South China Morning Post, Time Out, The Independent and The Evening Standard. Alan regularly has exhibitions, showing recently at the Saatchi Gallery, The Leica Galleries in London, Boston, Washington D.C., The Edit Space in Milan, and The Leica Galleries in Sydney & Melbourne.
Brands he has worked with include Apple, Philips, Huawei, Union Coffee, Kew Gardens, Nokia, Huntsman of Savile Row and London Fashion week. He is an ambassador for Leica Cameras.
He co-founded the Street Photography International Collective (SPi). It was set up to promote the best work in the genre, and to give a platform to talented yet unrepresented photographers. Today the SPi Instagram account is the largest dedicated street photography resource in the world with over 990,000 followers. Each month SPi has 14 million visits and receives over 100,000 image submissions.
Alan’s own Instagram following now exceeds 400,000 people.
Asides from photography, Alan has written articles for the Independent focusing on humanitarian issues. His author page can be found through this link. He is also a multi instrumentalist with a background in music production, a field he worked in prior to photography.
Laptops will be needed on the final day of the workshop. Students should be conversant with their hardware and software to facilitate downloading and review of photos. Alan will work with Photoshop to demonstrate his approach to processing for Black & White. Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom are recommended:
