Black & White: A Workshop With Alan Schaller
Join the Leica Akademie in Boston for a Black & White workshop with UK based photographer Alan Schaller this January 12th-13th, 2019.
This comprehensive workshop will heighten your understanding of black and white photography, both at the time of capture, and when editing. You will be shown how to coax the maximum tonality from any scene, from portraits with rich tonal depth through to high contrast street scenes. Alan Schaller’s black and white photography has found its way to the front covers of magazines, in leading newspapers, used for advertising by luxury brands, and has been exhibited and featured internationally. If you have a passion for black and white, in any genre of photography, this is your chance to learn how to set yours apart.

Saturday – 10:00am – 6:00pm
10:00am to 12.30pm: Morning lecture session in gallery with Alan. Introductions and an explanation of Alan’s approach to Black and White photography.
1:30pm -6:00pm: Following lunch an afternoon of shooting: This session will be an opportunity to put into practice what was discussed in the morning. Alan will work with everyone individually over the course of the afternoon.
Sunday – 10:30am – 5:00pm
10:00am to 12.30pm: Morning shooting session.
1:30pm – 5:00pm: An afternoon of review of student images from the day before or preexisting work: A discussion of post procession and different ways to approach it.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This workshop is open to all levels of photographers who are keen to grow their skill set. Owning a Leica is not required. Limited to 12 Students.
*A Leica Camera is not required for this class. Students must have a basic or intermediate operational knowledge of their camera. An assortment of Leica Cameras will be available on loan to try out.
Alan Schaller is a London based street photographer and photojournalist. He has worked in Africa, The Middle East, The USA, Australia and much of Asia and Europe.
Over time he has developed a distinctive black and white signature. Alan’s eye tends to be drawn to emotive moments, geometric compositions and light play.
His work has been featured in The Financial Times, Time Out and The Independent among other international publications. He has worked for clients including Typhoo, Kew Gardens and London Fashion Week. Alan co-founded Street Photography International whose Instagram account is one of the biggest in the world for the genre, with six million views a month.
Laptops will be needed on the final day of the workshop. Students should be conversant with their hardware and software to facilitate downloading and review of photos. Alan will work with Photoshop to demonstrate his approach to processing for Black & White. Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom are recommended:
