Visit southern Utah’s Zion National Park and experience one of North America’s most dramatic desert landscapes with Leica and America West photographer Michael Phaling.
Covering 299 square miles of the Colorado Plateau, Zion National Park is an awe-inspiring landscape dominated by the 2000 foot multicolored sandstone cliffs of Zion Canyon, Checkerboard Mesa’s, a meandering Virgin River, Aspen forests, and hidden canyons. November offers smaller crowds, and autumn’s waning golden light that washes the brilliant cliffs from sunrise to sundown against a backdrop of brilliant blue skies.
Color photography in Zion is a photographer’s dream…An artist’s palette full of crimson, purple, red, yellow, pink, orange, blues, and greens, permeate Zion. It’s virtual 360-degree panorama of color offers infinite photographic possibilities. Students will explore such areas as the Emerald Pools, Court of the Patriarchs, The Watchman View, The Great White Thrown, Weeping Rock, the Temple of Sinawava, Zion Tunnel, and Kolab Creek Road.
Accommodations are within minutes of the Zion Park entrance in the quaint town of Springdale…Nestled against Zions red rock cliffs will provide the group’s gathering place and subsequent starting point for each day’s adventure. Schedules will emphasize early-morning and late-afternoon light and cover both technical and creative topics. . Evenings will find us dining at one of the many Springdale restaurants. All meals are included in your workshop registration fee.

Workshop philosophy and group size
This trip will be limited to 10 photographers. The objective of the Leica Akademie is to celebrate photography of all kinds through real-world shooting experiences that help you discover your vision and point of view. We believe that people learn best in small groups, outside of a classroom, where content can be customized on the fly and casual conversations often bring the biggest revelations.
Who should take this workshop?
This workshop is designed for photographers interested in all aspects of landscape photography. Photographers of all experience levels are welcome, but a fundamental understanding of camera operation, including: shutter, aperture, and ISO, is expected.
Use of Leica photographic equipment is not required. We will have a selection of Leica cameras available for your use.
This Journey starts at noon, October 15th, 2018 and concludes at noon October 19th, 2018.
Spouse or Partner Rate:
We have a spouse, partner or friend rate of $350 that allows you to bring a companion along for the trip. Guests are invited to join us for group meals and the slideshow concluding the trip.
