Join the Leica Akademie for a fun and intensive three day workshop with photographer Matt Stuart in Washington D.C.!
This workshop will provide inspiration to intermediate and experienced photographers alike. Participants can expect to receive hands-on critical feedback, both in the classroom and on the street from one of the UK’s leading contemporary street photographers. The session will kick off with a presentation by Matt Stuart highlighting the work of iconic street photographers that have inspired him followed by a comprehensive discussion on techniques and tips for shooting effective street images. Stuart will share some do’s and don’t of working on the street as well as the stories behind his images.
Topics covered include:
- Street Photographers that influenced me.
- Why shooting with a rangefinder is like riding a bike.
- Skateboarding & photography
- Focusing quickly
- Moving from inspiration to finding your own style.
- Strategies for editing.
This experience combines theoretical discussion with practical assignments engineered to challenge how you think about making images. The format provides morning, afternoon and early evening shooting sessions, followed by one on one critiques and a group review to conclude the workshop on Sunday.
Who should take this workshop?
This workshop is intended for the intermediate or experienced photographer who is interested in street photography, Participants should already have a good understanding of proper exposure, focus, and general camera use.
A USB flash drive with portfolio images, or a website/link containing your portfolio will be needed on Friday night. It is NOT required that you use a Leica camera. As always, we will have a selection of Leica equipment on hand for you to try out.

Influenced equally by 1980s skateboard culture, Kung Fu and his father’s, timely, introduction to photography and the work of Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Matt has been committed to exposing the ironic, humorous and serendipitous moments of everyday life for nearly two decades.
He is a member of the international street photography collective, iN-PUBLIC and a nominee member of Magnum photos. His work has been exhibited internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions and featured in the New York Times, The Guardian, Huffington Post, Dazed & Confused. His photographs can be found in many books including Street Photography Now, published by Thames & Hudson in 2010.
His ability to make the common place notable has led to high profile commissions with The Tate, LSO, Vodafone, Sainsbury’s, British Land, and Sony Ericsson. Matt has become an in demand instructor and lecturer sharing his approach to photography at Oxford University, The Museum of New York and most recently during the East London photography festival.
