Leica in the Landscape – Zion National Park
November 6 – 10 2017
Fee $2,599.00 All Inclusive
Visit Southern Utah’s Zion National Park, and experience one of North America’s ultimate desert landscape destinations.
Covering 299 square miles of the Colorado Plateau, Zion National Park is an awe-inspiring landscape of 2,000-foot white, yellow, and crimson sandstone cliffs; sculpted mesas, aspen forests, winding riverbeds; and hidden canyons. November offers smaller crowds, and autumn’s waning golden light washes the brilliant-colored cliffs, setting them against contrasting blue Western skies. Zion Canyon, and its virtual 360-degree panorama of desert color, offers virtually infinite photographic possibilities.
Workshop leaders Tom Brichta and Michael Phaling will offer simple photographic topics for students to explore. Students may also request specific assignments. Throughout the day, the instructors will answer questions and provide the instruction necessary for students to expand their individual skills. In-field feedback as well as end-of-day critiques will help students unleash their unique, creative, vision.
Accommodations located in Springdale, Utah along the Zion National Parks southern border, and nestled against Zion Canyon’s red rock cliffs, will provide the group’s gathering place and subsequent starting point for each day’s adventure. Schedules will emphasize early-morning and late-afternoon light.
During the evening, guests can relax; or process images and share with fellow students and workshop leaders.
Morning and afternoon excursions will explore the highly-diverse visual landscapes of: the Watchman Trail, the Sentinel, Emerald Pools, Weeping Rock, the Virgin River, the Temple of Sinawava, and Checkerboard Mesa.
This Leica in the Landscape workshop series celebrates veteran Leica photographers Tom Brichta’s and Michael Phaling’s fifth season of collaboration. Tom has explored the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountain region for over two decades, while Michael’s photographic explorations span the breadth of the American West.
Topics Covered include:
- Light, Form, Color, Composition
- Exposure Control, Dynamic Range, White Balance
- Black and White Conversions
- Seeing as the camera sees
- Strategies for editing and processing in Lightroom
- Finding your own creative path
Workshop philosophy and group size
This trip will be limited to 10 photographers. The objective of the Leica Akademie is to celebrate photography of all kinds through real-world shooting experiences that help you discover your vision and point of view. We believe that people learn best in small groups, outside of a classroom, where content can be customized on the fly and casual conversations often bring the biggest revelations.
Who should take this workshop?
This workshop is designed for photographers interested in all aspects of landscape photography. Photographers of all experience levels are welcome, but a fundamental understanding of camera operation, including: shutter, aperture, and ISO, is expected.
Use of Leica photographic equipment is not required. We will have a selection of Leica cameras available for your use.
Event Dates: this journey starts on November 6th and concludes on the 10th.
