Leica in the Landscape – Eastern Sierra
October 2 – 6 2017
Fee $2,599.00 – All Inclusive
Visit California’s dramatic Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, and experience one of North America’s most captivating Fall-color destinations. This Leica Akademie North America landscape photography workshop offers four days of expert photography instruction, unique location insight, and relaxing accommodations.
This workshop is one- of a four-part Leica in the Landscape series, including: Point Reyes National Seashore, Yosemite National Park, the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, and Zion National Park. Students are welcome to participate in one, or all, workshops. The workshops are distributed throughout the year, making the most of each location’s unique seasonal character.
Workshop leaders Tom Brichta and Michael Phaling welcome photographers of all experience levels. From aspiring photographers practicing their landscape skills, to experienced artists seeking new- and inspiring subjects: everyone is welcome. All participants will be encouraged to expand their creative boundaries. This program serves the broad spectrum of landscape photography, spanning: travel, reportage, and fine art applications.
Throughout the workshop, guests will lodge at the Double Eagle Resort and Spa, in June Lake, California. Known as “the Switzerland of California,” June Lake will provide the group’s gathering place and subsequent starting point for each day’s adventure. Schedules will emphasize early-morning and late-afternoon light. During the evening, guests can relax; or process images and share with fellow students and workshop leaders.
Each day, workshop instructors will offer simple photographic topics for students to explore. Students may also request specific assignments. Throughout the day, the instructors will answer questions and provide the instruction necessary for students to expand their individual skills. In-field feedback as well as end-of-day critiques will help students unleash their unique, creative, vision. An Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (R) session is also included.
Morning and afternoon excursions will explore the highly-diverse visual landscapes of: Mono Lake, the June Lake Loop, Lundy Lake, Conway Summit, and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest.
This workshop’s geographically-unique destinations provide an uncommon variety of landscape subjects.
California’s Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains are a photographer’s paradise—especially during the Fall. As the changing season washes the region with one of the United States’ most beautiful Fall color explosions, photographic opportunities will range from soaring 14,000-foot peaks, and the Bristlecone Pine Forest; to the 7,000-foot High Desert region, and its pastoral lakes, rivers, and streams. During sunset and sunrise, Mono Lake’s moonscape vistas assume vibrant, mystical, colors.
This Leica in the Landscape workshop series celebrates veteran Leica photographers Tom Brichta’s and Michael Phaling’s fifth season of collaboration. Tom has explored the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountain region for over two decades, while Michael’s photographic explorations span the breadth of the American West. Tom is a Leica Akademie North America founder, and Michael began using Leica cameras when he was just 18 years old.

Workshop philosophy and group size
This trip will be limited to 10 photographers. The objective of the Leica Akademie is to celebrate photography of all kinds through real-world shooting experiences that help you discover your vision and point of view. We believe that people learn best in small groups, outside of a classroom, where content can be customized on the fly and casual conversations often bring the biggest revelations.
This workshop is one of a four-part Leica in the Landscape series, including: Point Reyes National Seashore, Yosemite National Park, the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, and Zion National Park. Students are welcome to participate in one, or all, workshops. The workshops are distributed throughout the year, making the most of each location’s unique seasonal character.
